Observational Platform - Aerosol In-Situ
Implemented and operated by Uppsala University
Operational in 2026
Östergarnsholm is a marine ICOS site since 2015 located on a small, very flat island in the Baltic Sea, 4 km from the eastern coast of Gotland and Herrvik harbor. Uppsala University has done measurements here since 1995. Since the island itself lacks grid power, the ACTRIS AIS and RTGIS station is located on the mainland of Gotland a few km away across the strait (57°24′N, 18°54′E). This small distance between the stations will not influence the origin of the air masses and hence the chemical composition and size distribution of the aerosol. The new 8 m2 ACTRIS laboratory has power and internet connections. Accommodation is available close to Herrvik, with 16 beds and full kitchens and toilets/showers. Meetings can be held at Uppsala University Campus Gotland in Visby, 53 km from Herrvik. A ceilometer measuring cloud heights and hydrometeors up to 7600 m has recently been installed on the ICOS station.
The site is operated by Station PI Anna Rutgersson and a research engineer.
