Description of the infrastructure

The Norunda research station (established in 1994) is located 30 km north of Uppsala in the southern part of the large boreal forest area. The surroundings are rather flat and dominated by Norway spruce and Scots pine with a small fraction of deciduous trees, mainly birch. Nearly 100 ha of mature century old forest around the ICOS main tower was harvested in 2022. It provides a unique opportunity to study atmosphere–biosphere interactions, starting with observations of the mature forest covering nearly three decades, through the intensive clear-cut period, and towards reforestation and a new forest growth cycle.

The Norunda site is operated by Lund University as one of the core sites of ICOS Sweden, with observations focused on ecosystem-atmosphere interactions and exchanges of greenhouse gases (CO2 and CH4), energy. momentum and water. The central measurement facility at Norunda is a 102 m high tower where atmospheric state variables, turbulence and trace gases are observed at several levels.

The ACTRIS observations were established at Norunda in 2018 after move from the Aspvreten station south of Stockholm, where aerosol observations were conducted since the 1980s.

Since 2025 the ACTRIS observations are hosted in new measurement 28 m2 laboratory, with additional observational platform on top, located 400 m from main ICOS tower. The Swedish EPA atmospheric environmental monitoring program will be also moved to a new laboratory. ACTRIS benefits from already available well-equipped ICOS facilities including service facilities with workshop, accommodation and meeting room.

The ACTRIS AIS and RTGIS activities at Norunda are operated by Stockholm University (station PI Radovan Krejci) and research engineers.
